£2.5bn Business Growth Fund to open
A £2.5bn business support fund is to start investing in businesses with an annual turnover of between £10m and £100m from April, it has been revealed. The Business Growth Fund, backed by the UK's six biggest banks, will aim to help small service and manufacturing businesses in its first year.

Essar to buy Stanlow oil refinery for £219m
Indian multinational Essar Group has signed an exclusive agreement with Shell UK to buy the Stanlow oil refinery in Ellesmere Port for £219m ($350m). The refinery is the second largest in the UK.

Retail sales improve but December worse than first thought
Retail sales improved in January, according to figures released by the Office for National Statistics. But the agency said the high street's performance for December was worse than first thought with a 1.4 per cent month-on-month sales decline recorded - downgraded from the 0.8 per cent fall which was already the worst performance on record.
