Whitehall could damage us - Broomhead

The North West’s future prosperity could be damaged if more regional powers are transferred to Whitehall. That's the view of Steven Broomhead, the Professor of Entrepreneurial Education at Liverpool Hope University and former chief executive of the Northwest Regional Development Agency. Speaking to Insider, he also questioned the speed in which the government axed regional development agencies, saying the transition to local enterprise partnerships (LEPs) should have been a gradual and piloted approach.

£185m North West Fund opens
The £185m North West Fund has opened and is ready to make investments. The public fund, one of the largest of its kind in Europe, is aiming to improve the region’s economic performance by an estimated £700m. Under EU rules, 40 per cent of the funds have to be invested in companies on Merseyside.

Centriforce in growth plan boost
Liverpool-based plastics recycler Centriforce Products says it has made "significant progress" towards its growth plans for the next three to five years. The privately-owned business, which converts plastic waste destined for landfill into new products, said it has doubled in size over the last four years as demand for its products has increased in the UK and overseas.

JLA set for 200,000 travellers this Christmas
More than 200,000 passengers are expected to pass through Liverpool John Lennon Airport during the Christmas and New Year holiday period, it said today. It comes as the airport has launched more long haul connections with Dutch airline KLM through its Amsterdam Schiphol hub.

CBI in urgent snow shift call
The authorities are not doing enough to shift snow and ice across the North West. That's according to Damian Waters, the North West director for the Confederation of British Industry (CBI). He has now issued an "urgent" plea for the Highways Agency and local councils to grit and clear major roads.

North West charities and non-profit bodies affected by budget cuts must make sure they do not break the law by trading while insolvent due to budget cuts. That's the warning coming from insolvency specialist R3.

Utility company service is 'poor', survey reports
A third of small businesses have described the levels of customer service provided by utilities companies as "poor" or "very poor". The findings were made in a survey by the Forum of Private Business, which has its head office in Cheshire.
