Business leaders come out in support of NWDA

The coalition government this morning unveiled its 30-page manifesto for the next five years that includes replacing regional development agencies (RDAs) with a new system of local enterprise partnerships. However, it did not say it would scrap all RDAs as the partnerships “may take the form of the existing RDAs in areas where they are popular”. The news follows calls of support for the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA) from business leaders in the region. The North West Business Leadership Team, led by chief executive Geoffrey Piper, and Private Sector Partners (PSP), which represents more than 140,000 companies in the region, have written open letters to new business secretary Vince Cable urging him to consider the agency’s importance on region-wide decisions. Piper said the NWDA provided “strong, coherent regional leadership”, while PSP leader Len Collinson added that it might be a “grave error of narrowness” to let councils take over the job of economic development. Last November, Cable told Insider he was impressed by the regeneration work of the NWDA, but said that the track-record of all RDAs on “industrial training” had been “poor” and that savings would need to be made. What are your views on RDAs? Should the NWDA be reformed or scrapped? Insider is seeing Cable this afternoon - let us know your thoughts.

Altrincham fit-out group Styles & Wood today said its strategy to diversify into the office and banking sectors has started to pay dividends and it is now set to achieve 40 per cent of group revenues from the sectors by the year end. In a trading update for the period from 1 January to 18 May, it added that it has now won a position on the Lloyds Banking Group framework.
