Liverpool reveals 'severe' cuts but pledges business support
Liverpool City Council has revealed its “heartbreaking” budget proposals for the next financial year, outlining how it will make £91m savings during the period. But the authority has emphasised its determination to work with businesses in order to grow the economy and has pledged £1.75m to economic development arm Liverpool Vision in the hope it can build on the city's success at the World Expo in Shanghai last year and attract more investment to the region.

Beetham hotel businesses call in administrators
Property group Beetham has been dealt another blow after its Manchester and Liverpool hotel businesses were placed into administration following reports of a dispute with its bank. Beetham Hotels Liverpool and Beetham Hotels Manchester collapsed earlier this week when joint administrators from accountancy firm KPMG were appointed. The move comes less than two weeks after administrators from Grant Thornton were called in at the group’s 40-storey West Tower building in Liverpool.

Liverpool FC welcome Hicks decision
Liverpool FC’s owners Fenway Sports Group, the Royal Bank of Scotland and former chairman Sir Martin Broughton have welcomed a decision to block former co-owner Tom Hicks from suing in the US over the sale of the club.

Profits up at Rathbones
Wealth manager Rathbone Brothers, thought to be Liverpool’s oldest company, has reported a 2 per cent increase in pre-tax profits to £30.1m in the year to 31 December 2010. Total funds under management rose by 19.3 per cent to more than £15bn for the first time, reflecting £1.24bn of "new net organic and acquired funds".

Newcastle-based Sherpa Business Consultancy is to open a new office in Liverpool. The company provides a range of services for the businesses, including investment and venture capital consultancy and sales development advice.

LJMU appoints new vice-chancellor
Professor Nigel Weatherill is to take over from Professor Michael Brown as the next vice-chancellor of Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU). Weatherill is currently pro-vice-chancellor and head of college of engineering and physical sciences at the University of Birmingham.

Maghull gets Central Square green light
Sefton Council has approved proposals by Maghull to redevelop Central Square shopping centre in Maghull town centre. The application includes the redevelopment of nine existing retail units to create 26,400 sq ft of retail space and 70 car extra parking spaces.

Bertram Nursery Group has taken 10,000 sq ft of space at Peel Group’s Princes Dock in Liverpool. The company operates 31 nurseries in Scotland and the North of England.

Bonus scheme launched to combat record low housebuilding
The government has unveiled details of its New Homes Bonus scheme to encourage communities to build more houses. The announcement came as it was revealed the number of new homes completed in England last year fell to its lowest level since 1923. Authorities in Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester, Leeds and Bradford are among the first to share £200m from the government's scheme.
