Reason for optimism, says Liverpool Chamber
The British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) says that unless interest rates are cut, the UK could be heading into recession. In its latest quarterly economic forecast, released today, the organisation also warns that it expects unemployment to rise by between 250,000 and 300,000 over the next two to three years. However, Liverpool's Chamber of Commerce is hopeful that Merseyside may be less affected than most. Chief executive Jack Stopforth said: "While these figures are worrying we remain cautiously optimistic. In our survey of members for the second quarter there was clear evidence that despite rising costs and a general slowdown in new orders, 33 per cent reported growing employment compared to only 13 per cent reducing jobs."
