Sir Alex Ferguson backs Morson £500m ambition
Recruitment and engineering business Morson is aiming for £500m turnover in 2011, according to its chief executive Ged Mason. The news came at the official opening of the Salford-based company's new office building, Adamson House, by Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Financial services business XCAP listed on AIM this morning with a market capitalisation of around £17.5m. The firm has raised £5m via a share placing at 4.5 pence per share.

WGA gets more time at Blackburn
The Indian businessman bidding to buy Blackburn Rovers has been given more time to investigate the Premier League club's finances. Ahasan Ali Syed's firm Western Gulf Advisory (WGA) was granted a four-week period of exclusivity last month to conduct due diligence. That has now been extended, according to WGA.

Cash-strapped property developer Eatonfield has said its existing financial resources should provide the group with sufficient working capital until mid-October. The company had expected to run out of cash this month.

IVA growth boosts ClearDebt
Strong growth in the individual voluntary arrangement (IVA) market has boosted full-year revenues and profits at Cheshire-based ClearDebt. The company said its £2.7m acquisition of the assets of the Relax Group also contributed to its “excellent year”.

Liverpool readies for Lib Dem conference
Thousands of delegates will descend on Liverpool this weekend as the Liberal Democrats five-day party conference gets underway at the ACC Liverpool tomorrow. The venue's chief executive Bob Prattey told Insider that more than 5,000 delegates and 1,600 journalists are expected to visit each day. He added that the heightened media interest in the event could act as an ideal showcase to attract more conferences to the city.

Businesses urged to 'try before they buy' graduates
A "try before you buy" scheme offering employers the chance to hire graduates as interns on a short-term basis is calling for more North-West businesses to sign up to the project. The University of Manchester scheme, thought to be the only one of its kind, has so far placed 45 students in paid internship roles this year. But, with 1,200 registered graduates fighting for places, it is on the hunt for more employers.

Public sector fear for small businesses
Thirty-five per cent of small businesses in the north fear they could be pushed into insolvency if they lose their public sector contracts, according to a survey by insolvency trade body R3.
