Vermont lands Ramada apartments
Liverpool developer Vermont has secured a 20-year agreement with US hotel giant Ramada to manage and operate 66 apartments in the third phase of its £100m Liverpool waterfront scheme, The Quarter. Corinthia Hotels International, the European joint venture partner of Ramada, will operate the units as apartment-suites alongside the four-star Ramada Plaza hotel already under construction. The units are within The Tower element of the scheme. Vermont reports that 83 per cent of the 187 phase-one apartments as sold. Mark Connor, chief executive of Vermont, said: "We are obviously delighted to have achieved another positive milestone for The Quarter. It is a tough market but we believe in the quality of our scheme. Taken together, the 66 apartments and the 173-room hotel will create a unique offer in the marketplace."

Chamber in good shape as Wade-Smith steps down
Liverpool Chamber of Commerce will this month report turnover up from £5m to £9m and a surge into profit as it prepares for David Wade-Smith to step down as chairman after a three-year tenure. Chief executive Jack Stopforth put the turnaround down to new programmes like Skillworks, a £4m scheme to provide training for small businesses. Wade-Smith is expected to be replaced by deputy chairman Ed Oliver, general manager of Clayton Square shopping centre.

Knowledge reigns supreme
The Work Foundation says the north-south divide is no more. Its How Can Cities Thrive in the Changing Economy report published today shows that 11 UK cities, including Manchester and Liverpool, have increased productivity by over 70 per cent in the decade from 1995 to 2005, a time in which new jobs in knowledge-intensive industries outnumbered those in other sectors by 12 to 1. The report warns that those cities over-reliant on financial services will suffer in the credit crunch.

Korova fights to save bars
Bar group Korova Corporation is working with advisers to save some of its smaller venues from closure. The group's Liverpool venues include Korova on Fleet Street, Geisha on Myrtle Street and Raven, Circo and Babycream at the Albert Dock. It also runs Negresco bar restaurants in Lark Lane and in Manchester and has three venues in Woolton.

Liverpool-based digital marketing agency Glow New Media has recruited two new staff to its growing company to help it meet increased client demand. Matt Smith joins as a web designer, bringing five years of high-level design experience to the role having worked with BT and internet service provider PlusNet. Speke now or forever hold your peace
Agency Edward Symmons has been appointed to sell the 999-year leasehold of the former Merseyside Engineering Training Centre in Speke Hall, Liverpool. The 1.75-acre site is adjacent to Hunts Cross Shopping Park. Edward Symmons' client, a private operator, has outline planning permission for a mixed-use development including a 55-bedroom hotel, offices and a restaurant.

What property slump?
Former Liverpool property valuer Kate Hughes has set up her own auction company, Merseyside Property Auctions, despite the slump in the housing market. Hughes spent nine years with Sutton Kersh Auctions, rising to become a senior valuer and achieving a 357 per cent growth rate in just five years. Her first Merseyside auction will take place in September at the Marriott Hotel in Speke, offering a mixture of residential and commercial property.

Liverpool accountancy firm buys rival
Liverpool-based chartered accountancy Edward Robinson & Co (ERC) has acquired rival Westmore Brennand as it looks to move into providing tax and business advisory services. Westmore Brennand's office on Old Hall Street will now close and its staff will transfer to ERC's premises at Brunswick Business Park. The firm's Chester office will remain open as ERC looks to increase is presence in the city. The deal sees the ERC's practice expand to five partners and 19 fee earners.

Co-op seals a bargain deal
The Co-operative Group has today announced that it has entered into an agreement to acquire Bristol-headquartered retailer Somerfield for £1.565bn, having driven the price down from the £1.9bn that Somerfield's major shareholders Apax Partners, Barclays Capital and Robert Tchenguiz, wanted earlier this year. Somerfield operates 880 stores across the UK and last year generated net sales of £4.2bn and earnings of £233m.
