Denham weighs into cruise row
Former communities secretary John Denham has accused Liverpool City Council of “trying its luck” in its bid to get the go-ahead to run cruises from the city’s terminal, having had a previous bid thrown out by the last government. He said a decision to allow Liverpool to become a full turnaround facility would be “unfair” to its main rival Southampton.

Crunch talks to fill boat show void
As Liverpool counts the cost of the cancellation of the inaugural boat show, council leader Joe Anderson has vowed to “pull out all the stops” to minimise the economic impact of the decision. He has called a meeting on 21 February to consider what alternative events can be staged between 29 April and 8 May when the boat show had been scheduled.

Postpone interest rate rise, says Stopforth
A premature hike in interest rates would make no difference to inflation in the short-term but would put the recovery at risk, according to Jack Stopforth, chief executive of the Liverpool Chamber. Stopforth was speaking following the news that inflation has hit the 4 per cent mark – its highest rate since November 2008.
