Liverpool FC’s prospective owner has vowed to fend off Tom Hicks and George Gillett’s “last desperate attempt” to remain in control of the Premier League club. John W Henry said his company New England Sports Ventures (NESV) has a £300m “binding contract” with Liverpool.

Liverpool is to have a permanent China ‘business champion’ to build on the success of the city’s presence at the World Expo 2010. Council leader Joe Anderson said the move would help to capitalise on contacts the city has made in Shanghai.

Liverpool discount retailer TJ Morris has risen to third in the annual Sunday Times HSBC Top Track 250 – the league table which ranks Britain’s 250 leading mid-market private companies. A total of 34 North West businesses made the list, up from 32 last year.

Asda set for Birkenhead store
Work is set to get underway on the long-awaited new Asda store in Birkenhead – a £30m investment in the town. Demolition of existing buildings on the site will begin on 1 November in readiness for the construction of the 90,000 sq ft store.

HOW lands Waitrose work
HOW Planning has been instructed by Waitrose to advise on plans for its new store in Chester. Waitrose, part of the John Lewis Partnership, announced its intention to build a new store on the site of Broughton Retail Centre earlier this year and has now appointed HOW to put together proposals for the redevelopment of the site.
