Intrinsic secures £20m contract
Haydock-based Intrinsic Technology has signed an agreement with education systems supplier Ramesys to design, deliver and support infrastructure solutions for the government's Building Schools for the Future (BSF) projects awarded to Ramesys over the next five years. The deal is worth £20m to Intrinsic as it partners the Nottingham-registered company on all converged and unified communications solutions. They are already working together on BSF projects for Manchester, Waltham Forest, Nottingham and Westminster City Councils. Gregg Spooner, strategic business director at Intrinsic Technology, said: "Intrinsic already has a strong foothold in the higher education and further education sectors. However, we are keen to expand further into the secondary education arena, and our partnership with Ramesys will ensure we achieve that."

Cop shop options on the table
Plans to build six "super-police stations" across Merseyside at a cost of £220m were approved yesterday. The Merseyside Police Authority will now start searches for suitable sites of about 215,000 sq ft each in Liverpool North, Liverpool South, Wirral, Sefton, St Helens and Knowsley. Building consultancy Turner & Townsend has presented two alternative designs - a naturally ventilated building costing £29.2m and a less environmentally friendly comfort-cooled option costing £28.5m per site.
Strong year for Deloitte
In a year that saw Deloitte's Merseyside office go from strength to strength, the North West practice of the business advisory firm has announced fee income up 11 per cent to £121m for the year to the end of May. Under the leadership of new partner in charge Sean Beech, the 70-strong Liverpool team will continue to provide advisory services to some of the region's best-known businesses such as Halewood International, Beetham, Merseyrail, and Everton Football Club.
Brunner Mond makes £400,000 investment in machinery
Brunner Mond, the soda ash and sodium bicarbonate producer owned by India's Tata Group, has invested £400,000 in new equipment at its Northwich West plant. The 65-tonne absorber vessel has been acquired from its parent company's subsidiary, Tata Chemicals, and will be used to make ammoniated brine, a chemical used in the manufacture of sodium carbonate. The company also confirmed that it is investing £10m in a new sodium bicarbonate plant at its Northwich East site that is set to come on stream in 2009.
Canal link taking shape
The new £20m canal link at Liverpool's Three Graces is taking shape. Yesterday the three-tonne floodgates built by Burscough engineering company Twinbridge were lifted into position at Mann Island. The 11-mile extension to the Leeds-Liverpool Canal is expected to be ready for use next spring. The latter stages will be overseen by Countryside Neptune, which is responsible for the mixed-use development of the Fourth Grace site.

Something for the weekend

Deal of the week
We're glad someone's still able to deliver the mail, and postal services firm Secured Mail this week received a £1.6m investment from Aquarius Equity Partners to fund its future growth plans. The Aintree-based company uses its fleet of vans to deliver millions of items of post every month under licence from the Postal Services Commission and plans to use the money to extend its service offering.
Frankly unbelievable quote of the week
Dr Tim Leunig, one of the authors of the Policy Exchange’s Cities Unlimited report, on why he’s not likely to come to Liverpool to face down a baying mob à la Boris Johnson: “I’m a full-time lecturer. It’s the time. I would love to be able to come, and if Liverpool was next to London I’d do it like a shot. But it’s a long way.” Isn’t it the summer holidays?
Canapé won't pay
Around 200 people gathered at Thornton Hall Hotel on the Wirral last night to help choose the region's favourite cheese. They sampled 19 different regional cheeses in four different categories - cows, goat and ewe, blue and semi-soft - in an event that's part of the run-up to the bank holiday weekend Wirral Food and Drink Festival, at which the winners will be announced. Experts from Tanners Wine Merchants, the Cheese Shop, Chester, and the Liverpool Cheese Company guided the visitors through the tastings and there were some cheesy cookery demonstrations by celebrity chef Brian Mellor.
We've got the power
Feel the power of Capital of Culture this weekend as the world’s largest offshore powerboat race series returns to the Albert Dock tomorrow. After the success of last year’s Honda Formula 4-Stroke final in Liverpool, the team is back and even moved the race to hit the city on the eighth month of 08. For more info on the Liverpool Grand Prix visit www.f4sa.com.
Pens at the ready
To mark 20/08 day next week the Liverpool Culture Company is launching the Legacy Diary Collection and wants everyone to go online and write a short entry about what they did on Wednesday 20 August 2008. Start planning now what you’re going to write when you log on. Insider would like to think that Jason Harborow and Sir David Henshaw, after doing so much to bring this about, will be contributing fully to this fun project. Go for it, Dave!
