Manchester City Council set for 2,000 job cuts
About 2,000 jobs are to go at Manchester City Council as the authority grapples to deal with a budget reduction of £110m over the next year. The Labour-run council said its workforce would be reduced by about 17 per cent as a result of the government’s spending cuts. The news comes after Manchester Council leader Sir Richard Leese told Insider last week that 2011 would be a "dreadful year".

MCR completes double Malbern sale
MCR, the administrators of Malbern Windows & Doors, has announced the sale of the company’s two business divisions located in Denton, Tameside and Heysham, Lancashire.

Big wheels keep on turning
Eighty-five jobs have been saved after the business behind the big wheels in Liverpool and Manchester was bought out of administration. WTA Global Holdings also operated three other observation wheels across the UK before it entered administration.

Quinton makes Dukinfield move
Commercial tyre supplier Quinton Tyres has relocated to a new £1.35m headquarters in Dukinfield after securing funding from NatWest. The company has completed the purchase of the 28,000 sq ft site in Fifth Avenue and brought together operations that traded from two separate sites in Tameside.

Clarke Energy sets £200m target
Knowsley-headquartered Clarke Energy, a supplier of gas powered generators and landfill gas recovery and generation plants, is targeting sales of more than £200m in the next 12 months following a record year in 2010. Chairman Jim Clarke said the business had a good order book going into 2011, while market conditions were continuing to improve.

Sales dip at the Co-op
The Co-operative Group, which was this week revealed to be number one in Insider’s list of Top 500 companies in the North West, today revealed that sales dipped in the final quarter of 2010. The company said sales fell 0.6 per cent in the 13 weeks to 1 January 2011, with a 3.2 per cent drop in its food division as a result of the winter weather affecting footfall.

Job losses as Burton's closes Wirral factory
Burton's Foods is to close its factory on the Wirral leading to the loss of 342 jobs, it has been announced. The food business, which makes Jammie Dodgers and Wagon Wheels, is also proposing 70 redundancies at its site in Llantarnam, near Newport in South Wales.
