MCR set to close nine Vergo Retail stores
The joint administrators of Liverpool-headquartered department store owner Vergo Retail have announced that nine loss-making stores will close in the next month, although they have not ruled out finding a buyer for the outlets. Sarah Bell and Steven Muncaster, partners at insolvency specialist MCR, said there was still an opportunity for interested parties to “come forward and rescue the remaining business as a going concern”. The outlets that are set to close are in Sunderland, Hexham, Chelmsford, Clackton on Sea, Stowmarket, Plymouth, Colchester, Norwich and Harwich. The closures have resulted in the loss of 335 jobs with immediate effect. “Following a financial review of the business it was apparent it could not continue to trade in the short-term without implementing immediate cost-saving measures,” said Bell. Lewis’s department store in Liverpool will also close in the next four weeks, while Vergo Retail’s remaining ten stores will continue to trade in the short-term while a buyer is sought. The majority of the stores set to close were acquired from the East of England Co-operative Society last July.

Liverpool wind farm given expansion go-ahead
The Crown Estate has given the go-ahead for the extension of the Burbo Bank wind farm in Liverpool bay. The site, operated by Dong Wind UK, is one of five sites that have been given the green light to expand. It is thought the expansions will provide enough power for an extra 1.4 million homes. However, all the extensions will be subject to full, new planning applications. Maria McCaffery, the chief executive of RenewableUK, said the announcement gave “definitive and positive evidence” of the environmental and commercial viability of existing offshore projects.

Tague on Tour – MOSI on down
Can Manchester’s Museum of Science & Industry (MOSI) be the attack brand the city needs to beef up its cultural offering? Insider property writer Neil Tague thinks it has to be. For his latest Tague on Tour column, he straps on his hard hat and peers into the building site that the museum's main hall currently is. “Cultural Manchester needs a big beast and logically, it has to be MOSI. It has the site, the heritage and the overall theme chimes with the ‘Original modern’ ethos espoused by the city fathers,” he says. For more from Neil, click here.
