Reds stadium hopes for green light

The detailed planning application for the new £26m stadium at Barton will go before Salford’s planners next Thursday. Salford City Council has formed a joint venture company with Peel to deliver the stadium, which will be home to the Salford City Reds rugby league club and will also house a range of community activities. It is due to be ready for the start of the 2012 rugby Super League season.

InforMed sold in £11.4m deal

A Macclesfield-based supplier of communications services to the pharmaceutical sector has been acquired by Ireland’s United Drug. The company will pay £11.4m for InforMed Direct, with an additional £5.9m subject to agreed profit targets over the next three years.

Hut Group acquires Findel businesses

Online retailer The Hut Group, based in Cheshire, has bought three loss-making businesses from Yorkshire home shopping group Findel. It has acquired CWIO, Confetti Network and iwantoneofthose.com through its subsidiary Metro Holdings for £600,000.

Bibby Distribution buys MRS assets

Liverpool-headquartered Bibby Distribution has continued to expand by purchasing assets of collapsed haulage operator MRS Distribution from administrators KPMG. Bibby has taken over two large contracts with packaging manufacturer Board 24 and industrial packaging firm Greif UK.

Nicely does it for Cyprotex

Macclesfield drug development business Cyprotex today announced its first-half performance has “held up nicely” despite a slow start to the year. The company, which last week bought a contract research lab based in Massachusetts for £2.68m, said revenues nudged up 1.3 per cent for the first six months of 2010.

LEP argument rages on in Lancashire

The fallout between local authorities in Lancashire is continuing over a decision to submit three bids to form local enterprise partnerships (LEPs) in the county. Lancashire County Council leader Geoff Driver said a single LEP would create a "strong and powerful economic voice" but Burnley Council leader Charlie Briggs has accused Driver of refusing to accept the merits of splitting the region into three, saying the council has "taken their ball home for the time being".

£18m cuts at Liverpool John Moores

Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) is set to cut its annual budget by 20 per cent in the next two years to cope with spending cuts in higher education. Speaking to Insider, vice-chancellor Michael Brown said that £9m would be taken out of the institution’s cost base during the next financial year with the same figure planned for 2011/12.

MOAF reports take-up 10 per cent up

Office take-up in Manchester city centre reached 135,904 sq ft in the second quarter of 2010, according to the Manchester Office Agents Forum (MOAF). This means that at the halfway point, the city had reached take-up of 324,890 sq ft, 10 per cent higher than the 293,737 sq ft that was recorded in the first half of 2009.

Northern Trust reveals new Ingol plans

Trevor Hemmings’ Northern Trust (NT) has finalised plans for the former Ingol golf club in Preston. The firm said the development of the 124-acre site will create the city's largest area of publicly accessible open land.
