Invest in skills, urges Land Rover chief
The managing director of automotive giant Land Rover last night called for more to be done to increase the engineering skills base of the UK and support the drive towards environmental efficiency in manufacturing. Speaking at the annual CBI Merseyside dinner, Phil Popham said: "Despite the economic gloom we are recruiting and will take on 600 graduates this year to work on improving the environmental performance of our vehicles. But finding engineers continues to be a challenge. We must do more to invest in education and make it attractive to young people." Land Rover employs 2,000 people at its plant in Halewood, where it manufactures the Land Rover Freelander 2 and Jaguar X-Type. The company was acquired in March by Indian conglomerate Tata. Popham added: "We only have a future if we go green and that's why, with Jaguar, we are investing £700m in sustainable technology. But this must be supported by skills."

Festival site - uncertainties remain
Langtree McLean has admitted its plans for the Liverpool International Garden Festival site, approved by Hazel Blears yesterday, are still some way from becoming a reality in the current economic climate. The joint venture developer will thrash out the phasing of the scheme with Liverpool City Council. Frank Reil, managing director of David McLean, said: "We have got to re-evaluate the current position in the market for what we see as a long-term scheme."

Something for the weekend
To the heart of the matter
There's rarely a dull moment in sports retail. Mike Ashley, the recluse-turned-publicity junkie behind Sports Direct, this week shrugged off falling sales by pooh-poohing a rumoured bid for JJB Sports, the Wigan retailer headed by his former protégé Chris Ronnie. He told the FT: "Chris is in the wrong job - he could have become something in the squash world but didn't." Ronnie replied: "I challenge him to a game of squash if the FT pays for the funerals," somehow resisting the urge to use Michael Caine's "You're a big man but you're in bad shape" line.

Deal of the week
Manufacturing has become sexy again as stable, reliable returns are actually enough in this market. So let's not forget the hundreds of widget businesses that do deals when the rest of the world isn't watching. This week Wirral-based Heaps & Partners, which specialises in fluid control equipment for industrial applications, went through a management buyout, with managing director David Millar buting out other family members. He said: "It's an exciting time of change and I'm pleased the process is complete. It will provide continuity for employees, customers and suppliers so we will continue to be a strong contender in the marketplace."

"Aren't blogs fun?" quote of the week
"I am willing to offer all the evidence I have about that dirty, despicable blog. We should stand up and be decisive about putting it where it deserves to be - in the bin." Council leader Warren Bradley on the Liverpool Evil Cabal blog, which Cllr Joe "Angry" Anderson alleges was leaked information by former leader Mike Storey, who challenges Anderson to repeat the accusation outside of the council chamber. There's a theme emerging here.

Talking tough quote of the week
"I would invite Mr McDonnell to raise any issues directly with me, outside the speaking immunity of the Houses of Parliament, which allow MPs to say what they like." Sayers' chairman Sandy Birnie, who along with Michael Quinlan bought the business back from administrators last month, responds to Labour MP John McDonnell's claim that former Sayers employees have been victims of a plot "planned over time by the same personnel who are now benefitting from it".

Canapé won't pay
Despite the best efforts of Northern Rail, Insider just about made it to the Rensburg River Cruise last night, for which the weather was strangely serene. But, from a canapé point of view, the effort wasn't really worth it in what we'll put down to a rare off day for caterer Carringtons - only one dessert was spotted. But to be fair, mid-Mersey catering is not that easy.
