Princes breaks into Insider top ten
Liverpool food and drink giant Princes has broken into the top ten of Insider’s Top 500 – the annual ranking of North West companies based on turnover and profitability. The business, which reported sales of more than £1bn in 2010, crept up two places to tenth in the list. Discount retailer Matalan, headquartered in Skelmersdale, also continued its impressive rise, moving up from seventh to fifth.

German giant swoops for AT Group
Haydock-based electrical engineering company AT Group (ATG) has been bought by German-owned engineering giant Bilfinger Berger for an undisclosed sum.

Weightmans in talks with Mace and Jones
Law firm Weightmans has confirmed it is in merger talks with North West rival Mace and Jones. In a statement, the firm said it hoped to agree terms shortly.

IS Pharma expands in Ireland
Chester-headquartered pharmaceutical company IS Pharma has agreed a deal to buy the Irish commercial operations of Switzerland-based Helsinn Healthcare. It will pay about £3.7m for the business.

Not all doom and gloom for Liverpool in 2011 - Stopforth
Liverpool is soon likely to feel the "tough" force of public sector cuts following a 'phoney war' period, the city's chamber of commerce's chief executive Jack Stopforth told Insider. But as we enter 2011, he is confident Liverpool can blossom given its "underlying strength" and take particular advantage of its presence in Shanghai to bring new investment to Merseyside.

Culture boosts Liverpool economy
Culture continues to provide a fillip for the Liverpool economy, figures have revealed. The Mathew Street Music Festival (MSMF) was a particular boost last year, bringing in £5m more than the £15m generated in 2009.

Land Rover’s sales up 28 per cent
Automotive giant Land Rover registered more than 42,000 new vehicles in the UK in 2010 compared to about 33,000 in 2009. This represents an increase in sales of 28 per cent from the previous year.
