Betfred and Sportech in Tote bid battle
Fred Done’s Warrington-based Betfred chain and Sportech, the Liverpool-headquartered operator of the football pools, have both submitted sealed bids to buy state-owned bookmaker the Tote, Insider understands. The deadline for offers, set by the government’s adviser Lazard, expires today.

Japanese-owned Rika International has doubled its European headquarters in Oldham after winning investment from the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA). The chemical research and development business says the expansion will meet an "upturn in demand".

Two Lancs LEP bids amid 'tedious squabble'
New Local Enterprise Partnership bids have been submitted for Lancashire - one covering the Central Lancashire and the other, the Blackburn and Burnley areas, the government has confirmed. But the North & Western Lancashire Chamber of Commerce told Insider that Lancashire leaders should unite and end their "tedious squabble about territory".

BAE axes jobs
Defence giant BAE Systems is to cut up to 1,350 jobs in the UK, with hundreds set to go at the company’s site at Woodford near Stockport. The move follows the government's defence review and its decision to scrap the Nimrod and Harrier jets.

A-Plant boosts Ashtead profits
Warrington plant hire firm A-Plant has reported rising profits for the six months to 31 October, despite a dip in revenues. Ashtead Group, the company’s parent, said markets remain fragile, but the momentum the group has established should help it to deliver full year results ahead of expectations.

Losses widen at Classic Lodges
Classic Lodges, the country hotels business bought by leisure tycoon Trevor Hemmings, has posted increased losses in its latest financial year. The company owns Farington Lodge Hotel near Preston, as well as eight other hotels across the UK.
