Betfred and Sportech in Tote bid battle
Fred Done’s Warrington-based Betfred chain and Sportech, the Liverpool-headquartered operator of the football pools, have both submitted sealed bids to buy state-owned bookmaker the Tote, Insider understands. The deadline for offers, set by the government’s adviser Lazard, expires today.

Capital of Culture boosted Liverpool economy
The Liverpool economy grew more than any other major city while it was the European Capital of Culture. Government figures reveal it grew by 4.6 per cent between 2007 and 2008 and increased by nearly £400m from £8.2bn to £8.6bn.
