Increasing redundancies of little surprise, says Stopforth
A new report that has found that almost a third of employers across the public and private sectors expect to make redundancies during the next three months should be of little surprise to the coalition government, according to Liverpool Chamber of Commerce chief executive Jack Stopforth. He told Insider that the austerity measures have been under-thought and were bound to have a knock on effect for the private sector.

University launches new centre
The University of Liverpool will today launch the International Centre for Educational Opportunities at the World Expo in Shanghai. The new Liverpool-based centre aims to be an "international hub" to connect practitioners and researchers working to boost the number of under-represented factions of society in higher education.

Indonesian delegation seeks UK investment
A delegation from the Indonesian Embassy has visited the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce seeking partners and investment. The delegation was headed by Tumpal Hutaggalung, minister counsellor, based at the embassy in London.

Cautious welcome for business lending taskforce
Business groups in the region have given a cautious welcome to news that the chief executives of the UK's six biggest banks have formed a taskforce to examine the lack of lending to small businesses. Stephen Green, chairman of HSBC and the British Bankers’ Association, will lead the group and report back to Chancellor George Osborne in October.

Liverpool’s Atlantic Chambers has been appointed to the North West Legal Consortium (NWLC) and is now welcoming instructions. It is one of a number of chambers and law firms to have successfully bid to provide legal services to many of the region’s local authorities under the new procurement exercise.

The coalition government still has a “huge job to do” to inform the public about its spending cuts. That's according to a "public jury" which is backed by a PricewaterhouseCoopers-commissioned (PwC) report from BritainThinks.

Mortgage fraud quadruples in first-half
Mortgage fraud has nearly quadrupled in value during the first six months of 2010, according to the latest "Fraud Barometer" by KPMG. There were 21 cases reported during the period, up from 18 a year earlier. The value of the cases rocketed from £24m to £96m.

Home interiors retailer Elaine Cunningham Interiors is to take additional space in Chapel Street, Liverpool. The company will open Elaine Cunningham Home Store on 2 September in a 2,000 sq ft unit located next to its existing BoConcept outlet.

Business parks market needs private sector boost, says GVA
There is little incentive for developers to build business park stock, according to the latest Business Parks Review from consultancy GVA Grimley. Speculative development in the North West’s business park market has virtually halted, with just two major projects on-site. These are the new Greater Manchester Police headquarters in Manchester’s Central Park and the Home Office scheme in Birchwood.

HCA confirms housing funding
The Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) has confirmed that it is to invest almost £20m on stalled housing schemes in the North West. Eleven schemes are set to benefit, with the construction of more than 750 new council properties planned.
