Chinese company moves for CBI
Globelink China Logistics has marked its entrance into the UK market with the acquisition of Manchester freight forwarding business CBI Global Freight Management. The relationship between the two companies stretches back to 2005 and takeover talks have been ongoing since last year.

Brathay buys timber stake
Brathay Investments, run by Peter Cowgill and David Rogan, has acquired a major shareholding in Lancashire-based European Wood Products from owners Paul and Alison Bailey. Paul Bailey, who founded the business in 1990, has retained a significant equity stake and will continue as a director.

Stadium revenue is key, says Fletcher
The chief executive of Burnley FC has launched a stinging attack on football stadia designers and called for greater respect for fans in the development of new grounds. Speaking at Insider’s Business of Sport Summit, held at Lancashire Country Cricket Club yesterday, Paul Fletcher said that revenue was the most important thing when it came to developing sports infrastructure.

Redrow back in profit, but market tough
Redrow, the house builder, this morning revealed it had moved back into profit as it sold more houses at higher prices. The Flintshire company made a £700,000 pre-tax profit from continuing operations in the year to June, compared to a £44.2m loss the year before. Revenue grew almost 25 per cent to £397m from £302m. But chairman Steve Morgan warned economic conditions were hard, and called on the UK government to help first-time buyers.

Smartcards at the ready as Scales rolls out transport plan
Neil Scales, chief executive of Merseytravel, has said that the transport authority is preparing to batten down the hatches over the next three years. But there could be major changes in smartcard technology on the city region’s transport network.

HMV man to join Holidaybreak
The group finance director at HMV Group is to join education, leisure and activity travel group Holidaybreak. Neil Bright will replace the retiring Bob Baddeley as finance director.

Salford developer LPC Living has been granted detailed planning permission to build a new mixed-use scheme in Ordsall, a scheme it says will result in around 500 new jobs for the area.

Consultancy CB Richard Ellis has been instructed as sole agent to let 175,000 sq ft at former Halliwells headquarters 3 Hardman Square, in Manchester’s Spinningfields. The building is owned by Credit Suisse Asset Management and asset managed by Müller International.

Stride Treglown Architects has announced a merger with Manchester-based architectural practice EK Architects. South West-headquartered Stride Treglown formed its Manchester office through the takeover of Manchester outfit Chapman Robinson in late 2006.

Beva lets at Walker Park
Beva has let 192,000 sq ft of its Walker Park development in Blackburn to Pretek Precision Homes on a ten-year lease. Pretek specialises in energy efficient, eco-responsible homes.
