Liverpool centre looks to halt brain drain
A new centre designed to halt the flow of graduate talent out of the region is set to be launched in Liverpool. The Graduate Enterprise Centre will be based at Liverpool Science Park and is aimed at graduates working in science and knowledge-based sectors, including the creative industries, pharmaceuticals, life sciences, ICT and software development.

Hope Street Hotel moves to Co-op Bank
Liverpool’s Hope Street Hotel has completed an £8.8m refinancing package with the Co-operative Bank’s Liverpool corporate banking centre, giving it security for the next 15 years. The deal follows the completion of the boutique hotel’s extension, completed in 2009.

Alpha aims for UK expansion
Alpha Biolaboratories, a provider of drug, alcohol and DNA testing services, is looking to broaden its geographical reach after securing a £100,000 enterprise finance guarantee loan from NatWest. The Warrington-based company hopes add to its string of clients across the north by expanding into the Midlands.

Yorkshire Bank has appointed a new managing partner in Liverpool. Andrew James has moved from Bank of Ireland to take the role.

Business Link to cut 194 staff
Business Link Northwest is to cut more than half of its staff after having its budget slashed. The organisation, which is managed by the Northwest Regional Development Agency, is to reduce its workforce from 338 to 144 over the next six months.

Scales to launch Merseyside’s transport plan
This morning sees the launch of the second stage of consultation on Merseyside’s next Local Transport Plan (LTP3). The 12-week public and stakeholder consultation, which runs until 30 November, will gather views on Merseyside’s transport needs.

The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has appointed PR firm Artemis Media & Public Affairs to handle its media affairs in the North West. The CBI, which represents 2,000 businesses in the North West, is looking to promote its events and work in the region to a wider audience.

Profits up at A-Plant
First quarter profits are up at Warrington plant hire firm A-Plant despite a fall in revenues. The company, part of Ashtead Group, posted an operating profit of £2m for the three months to 31 July, up from £1.1m for the same period a year earlier.

Chester Business Quarter ‘could create 1,100 jobs’
The proposed Central Business Quarter in Chester could create 1,100 jobs, according to a council report. The proposals, being discussed today, would create 870 jobs in high-value knowledge-based positions.
