Liverpool battens down the hatches
Professionals in Liverpool were cautious this morning in the face of headlines about a looming recession. Andrew Noon, a partner at the Liverpool office of law firm DLA Piper, said the city will continue to be affected by the current conditions. "Whether or not certain cities or regions will prove to be more resilient remains to be seen and Liverpool should stand as good a chance as any," he said. Paul Barrow, managing partner of Liverpool-based Quinn Barrow solicitors, said businesses in the city should be concerned, particularly given the reliance on the service sector, and added: "Liverpool is full of completed and partially completed property developments. The local business community needs to seek a fresh and innovative approach to this overabundance of empty property within the city." Uncertain times call for discipline and Mark Fuller, managing director of Alliance Fund Managers in Liverpool, said: "2008 can be a successful year for Liverpool businesses as long as they plan ahead and stay on top of cash flow."

Consultation underway on Cumbrian plans
Cumbria Vision has launched a major consultation on a series of action plans that links the county's regeneration strategy with results on the ground. The 11 Strategy Action Plans are designed to act as a vision for Cumbria's economic future, with the delivery of regeneration projects that will improve skills, create better paid jobs and stimulate more inward investment from businesses. Simon Sjenitzer, strategy director at Cumbria Vision, said: "The Strategy Action Plans provide a roadmap from aspiration to action. There is no bottomless pit of money we can spend to address years of decline and we must therefore fully understand the priority actions required across Cumbria." Public sector organisations and businesses have until 5 September to comment on the documents.
