Entries now open for Big Chip Awards
Insider is set to partner the Big Chip Awards 2010, the biggest digital awards ceremony outside London, for a second successive year. The awards, now in their 12th year, are open to North West businesses excelling in the use of digital technology. Last year, Liverpool-based technology company New Concept Gaming walked away with three awards, including the top prize of the night, while digital agency Mando Group scooped one award. Insider is acting as media partner for the event alongside trade publication New Media Age. Shaun Fensom, chairman of independent trade organisation Manchester Digital, the event’s organiser, said: “It’s very exciting to be ushering in the 12th Big Chip Awards. Despite the economic climate, last year’s awards were the largest ever for submissions, sponsorship and attendees.” The awards are now open for entry in categories ranging from best use of animation to best digital marketing campaign and best application of technology. For further details - and to enter before the 1 March deadline - visit the Big Chip website.

Johnson Service to meet expectations
Johnson Service Group, the dry-cleaner and workwear provider based in Preston Brook, Cheshire, this morning said it is on target to meet expectations despite the tough economic conditions. In a statement to the stock exchange, it said its dry-cleaning division saw only a small improvement in trading in the second half of 2009, as it was hit by the cold snap, while its facilities management arm showed “modest profitability and revenue growth”. Profits in its textile rental division are also expected to show a modest increase. In December, the group announced a refinancing deal that has provided a new £78.5m facility until 30 April 2013.

Yesterday it emerged that 39 companies across the North West were told to switch from gas to alternative sources of fuel. That number has been reduced to 15 today. National Grid, which did not reveal the companies affected, said this was the first time it has had to ask firms to do this since 2003.
