"The worst is over," says United Utilities
Commuters and businesses in Manchester were relieved to hear this morning that the disruption caused in the city centre over the last year by major United Utilities (UU) works is nearly at an end. Speaking at a press briefing, UU chief executive Philip Green said: "The worst is definitely over. We have replaced Victorian mains built in 1850 and have had a lot of support, because people understand why we needed to do this." The next stage of the current rebuilding programme will be the £120m upgrade of a pipeline between Liverpool and Manchester, on which work will start in 2009. On Monday UU will announce the next programme, a five-year plan that has been submitted to regulator Ofwat and on which the public will be able to comment until April next year.

N Brown urges Oldham to play ball
Manchester home shopping giant N Brown is appealing to Oldham Metropolitan Borough Council to help see its proposals to extend its Shaw warehouse through the planning process. The retailer says that the extension, which would add 100 jobs, would mean it no longer needs to use Shaw as a hub for other warehouses it uses, thus reducing the congestion about which residents are concerned. Inward investment agency MIDAS is monitoring the situation.

Pay it forward
Payzone, the Northwich and Ireland-based provider of payment systems, has issued a response to speculation about the sale of its European businesses. The AIM-listed company said: "We have received a number of approaches from parties interested in acquiring our Spanish, Italian and French businesses. The board and its advisers are evaluating these proposals. There can be no certainty that the current discussions will lead to a transaction." The group was formed by the reverse takeover of Blackpool-based Cardpoint by Irish company Alphyra in autumn 2007.

British Airways, Alpha Airports Group, SSP UK Air and VLM Airlines, along with the publicly-owned Manchester Airport, have all joined the pro-Transport Innovation Fund bid United City group, now at 107 members. The five aviation companies employ almost 4,000 staff at Manchester Airport, over 20 per cent of the total workforce. The airport - outside the congestion charging zone - is set to receive a Metrolink extension as part of the proposals.

Something for the weekend
Deal of the week

With Insider’s China issue hitting desks around the region, it’s entirely apt that this week’s eye-catcher comes from Oldham-based sourcing business Ultimate Products, which snapped up Active Asia, a rival in its Hong Kong territory. The deal gives Ultimate greater penetration into the US consumer market. Ultimate was founded in 1997 by Barry Franks and Simon Showman and underwent a £25m buyout by LDC in 2005.

Mr Motivator goes it alone
Mike Finnigan, the North West's most enthusiastic man, has left Preston-based Advance Performance and started his own one-man motivational business i2i (impossible to inevitable). Finnigan said the split is amicable and he will work with Advance on projects: "I just want the freedom and time to do so many different things. I just want to be great around people. I've been involved in meetings and strategy at Advance and it's just not me." He's still working closely with Everton FC and Travel Counsellors.

On the map
Thanks to the London PR desperate to flog a story about a client opening a new base in West Yorkshire. "Elland's in Yorkshire, sorry." "Yes I know - is Yorkshire not in the North West then?" On being corrected, the PR - probably called Tarquin Fforbes-Twistleton - replied: "I used to live in Leeds, as well. I should really know better shouldn't I?" Yes, you should.

View from the nationals
The Guardian generally covers this region better than most – let’s face it, it should do – but the Olympic-tied article yesterday on the evolution of Chinese food in the UK contained a shocking oversight. Nowhere in the timeline was there room for a mention of the influence of Manchester or Liverpool’s Chinatowns, or the mark made by landmark restaurants like the Yang Sing – venerated by food critics the nation over, including the Guardian’s own top curmudgeon Matthew Norman. For shame!
