Tesco chief to sit on shadow LEP board
Sir Terry Leahy, the chief executive of supermarket giant Tesco, is among the senior business figures that make up the Liverpool city region’s shadow local enterprise partnership (LEP) board, it has been revealed today. Representatives from Jaguar Land Rover and Peel Holdings, the property giant which has submitted a bid to form its own LEP in the North West, will also sit on the board.

Northern Diver secures funding line
A Wigan-based importer and wholesaler of diving equipment has secured a £250,000 funding line from Yorkshire Bank to support its growth plans. Northern Diver (International) will use the cash to upgrade its premises and fulfil a contract worth more than £2.5m with the Ministry of Defence.

Port of Liverpool increases capacity
The Royal Seaforth container terminal at the Port of Liverpool is to increase its operating capacity over the next two months following the “continued growth” of the port. The terminal is set to increase the number of ground slots it has in operation by 5,000 by the end of October.

Pavilion hits the 500,000 mark
Liverpool’s pavilion at the World Expo in Shanghai has officially clocked up half a million visitors. The pavilion is now averaging more than 4,500 visitors per day.

A new apprenticeship scheme tailored for the creative industries has been launched in Merseyside. The Creative Break initiative is aimed at young people looking to start a career in the sector.

Prism Ideas in university link up
Cheshire-based Prism Ideas, a provider of medical communications and drug development consultancy services, has launched a training scheme with the University of Liverpool. The agreement will see the company work with the university to raise awareness of careers within medical communications and share technical knowledge and skills with students.

Contact named as HSBC regional finalist
Liverpool digital set top box designer and manufacturer Contact has been named as a regional finalist in the HSBC Business Thinking 2010. The company is one of six across the North West in the running to win up to £5m in lending, plus a cash prize of up to £100,000.

McHale takes Liverpool housing role
The former chief executive of Knowsley Housing Trust has been appointed interim director of housing and neighbourhoods at Liverpool City Council. John McHale has been given the role for the next six months and will work with council leader Joe Anderson on securing major improvements to housing.

Social clubs can save, says Knight Frank
Knight Frank has been instructed to advise Merseyside-based Quarry Green Tenants Association and Longmoor Social Club on their rating valuations. The instructions follow on from the current general rating revaluation, which began on 1 April and has seen all commercial and non-domestic properties adopt new rate assessments.
