Synergy secures Rosebud cash
An electric wire manufacturing business has opened its doors in Skelmersdale after securing funding from the Rosebud business finance scheme. Synergy Cables received an undisclosed package from Rosebud, which scooped the Fund of the Year award at Insider’s Lancashire Dealmakers Awards 2010.

Broadband boost for North West businesses
All businesses in the North West should have access to super-fast broadband by 2015 under new plans outlined by the government. As part of an £830m investment, the coalition has set aside £50m to test how broadband can be rolled out to rural communities, with Cumbria earmarked as a trial area.

New name for enterprise organisation
Merseyside enterprise organisation Train 2000 has changed its name to The Women’s Organisation. The move comes ahead of its relocation to a new purpose-built £5m centre dedicated to women’s enterprise being built in Liverpool’s Baltic Triangle area.

SCA Hygiene fined £120,000
A paper company has been fined £120,000 after a worker was left paralysed from the chest down in an incident at work. John Shaw, from the Wirral, was working for SCA Hygiene Products in Oakenholt, near Flint, when the accident happened in July 2007. He was crushed beneath a two-tonne reel of paper.

Heinz workers vote to strike
Workers at the Wigan factory of food giant Heinz have voted to go on strike in a row over pay, it has been confirmed. The factory employs about 1,200 people and makes beans, soups, pasta meals and baby food.

Warrington accountancy firm Brookson has appointed three new senior directors. Greg Phillips, Sandra Rowley and Lee Kingshott have all moved from the banking sector to join the firm.

Galliford Try named in Halton BSF consortium
Uxbridge construction group Galliford Try has been confirmed as construction and investment partner of the local transformational partnership (LTP) that has been appointed as the preferred bidder on the £50m Halton Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme.

Interserve expands following nuclear deal
Construction and maintenance business Interserve Industrial has moved into a new 230,000 sq ft Pioneer Point facility in Ellesmere Port. The expansion follows a £20m contract win to work on a £400m clean-up project at Sellafield in Cumbria. The contract has created 175 new jobs.
