Lewis's redevelopment approved
The £105m plans by Merepark and Capital & Counties to redevelop Liverpool's Lewis's building were approved yesterday by the city council's planning committee. The plans will give prominence to the store's striking frontage, including the Liverpool Resurgent statue by Sir Jacob Epstein, while the 420,000 sq ft building will be opened out at the rear onto a new public plaza connecting to the Central Village development - also a Merepark scheme - and the Ropewalks beyond. A music venue will be situated in the basement and a bar at ground level, with offices and a three-star hotel on the upper floors. Merepark director Ian Jones said: "This is an iconic building and from the acquisition we've worked closely with English Heritage and Liverpool City Council to preserve its unique character."
