Confident St Modwen hopes for Merseyside success
Developer St Modwen is confident that its schemes across Merseyside can reach critical mass over the next year as it enters a busy stage of development. Speaking to Insider at the British Council for Shopping Centres (BCSC) conference in Manchester this week, projects director Paul Batho said: “We’ve got a number of schemes onsite and a number about to start. It’s all about viability now and food-led retail schemes are working – and we’ve been able to land some pre-lets to allow us to develop.”

Construction jobs at risk by VAT rise - FMB
The Federation of Master Builders has criticised the government's decision to raise VAT in January, claiming it will result in the loss of 7,500 jobs in the construction sector. Frances Shaw, regional director for FMB North West, told Insider the government's drive for energy-efficient homes - the Green Deal - could also be threatened by the VAT rise.

Scott looks abroad after £40m order
Skelmersdale-based manufacturer Scott Health & Safety is looking to develop business abroad following a £40m contract with the MoD. Scott specialises in making specialist respirator devices used in military and civil defence operations. Its General Service Respirator mask order for the MoD involves making more than 300,000 units and has led to the creation of 50 jobs, extensions to the warehouse and car park and £2.5m extra investment in the plant and tooling. Its global director for military and civil defence, Nigel Holmes, spoke to Insider.

More than £375m invested in North West - NWDA
More than £375m has been invested in projects and programmes across the North West over the last two years by the Northwest European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). That's according to the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA), which manages the fund.

Airbus order 'worth $5bn' to UK
Airbus has won an order for 102 new planes from China for its A320, A330 and A350 aircraft. Business minister Mark Prisk says it will provide a boost to its Broughton plant.

MSoft on European trail
Ellesmere Port-based MSoft says it is setting its sights on European expansion following a series of major contract wins with hospitals in the UK. The technology company's blood-tracking systems have helped the company win deals with the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust and the Royal Hampshire County Hospital in recent weeks.
