Funding boost for new Liverpool businesses
Liverpool City Council's executive board is today expected to endorse a £7m funding grant to help boost the number of start-up businesses in the region. The funding will be used over the next two years to develop enterprise schemes for young people and support fledgling businesses in the north Liverpool and south Sefton areas. The initiative is part of the Stepclever programme, a project funded by government’s Local Enterprise Growth Initiative. “For the next two years, this innovative legacy funding will help boost business support, hone new skills, create jobs and bring a positive impact to the economy, residents and communities in these areas,” said Gary Millar, the council’s executive member for enterprise and member of the Stepclever board. Since being established three years ago, Stepclever has invested approximately £21m in a range of projects, created more than 600 jobs and given advice and funding to more than 800 businesses.

Mersey tidal power moves closer
Peel Energy today said it has made a “major step” forward in selecting a preferred scheme for generating electricity from the tides within the Mersey Estuary. The announcement follows the results of a feasibility study completed by Drivers Jonas and EDF, on behalf of Peel Energy and the Northwest Regional Development Agency. The study recommends four different types of technologies that should be taken forward for further analysis. Anthony Hatton, development director at Peel Energy, said: “There is a long way to go, but our goal is to have a tidal power scheme generating electricity from the Mersey in time to contribute to the national target of generating 15 per cent of the UK’s energy needs from renewable sources by 2020.” Peel hopes to submit a planning application by the end of 2011.
