Selvan issues Big Society challenge
Social entrepreneur Fay Selvan, the chief executive of Manchester-based Big Life Group, has called on North West businesses to better participate in wider society and help bring about a step change in the region. Speaking at an engaging debate on the government’s Big Society agenda, hosted by Insider and law firm Hammonds, she challenged companies to make the region “the most civic minded, most participatory region in the country”.

I-Paye remains upbeat despite sales fall
Merseyside umbrella services company I-Paye has hailed a successful fifth year of trading despite a drop in turnover and profits in its last financial year. Founder and managing director Gaynor McGrail told Insider the company was back on track in 2010 and on target to triple the size of the business within the next five years.

Morgan hits out at mortgage rule change

Cheshire councils to challenge waste decision
Two Cheshire councils have warned that they could issue a formal challenge against the government’s decision to withdraw £100m of support for the county’s 25-year waste disposal masterplan. Cheshire West and Chester and Cheshire East Council had selected waste management giant Viridor as preferred bidder for the £850m contract.

Rathbones increases funds under management
Wealth manager Rathbone Brothers, thought to be Liverpool's oldest company, has again increased its funds under management to £14.54bn at 30 September, up 11 per cent on the £13.1bn at the end of 2009. But it warned that while markets have improved, the economic outlook remains uncertain.

Household goods giant Unilever has reported a 13.2 per cent rise in third-quarter revenue, but warned that higher commodity costs were putting pressures on its profit margins.

Salford Council has approved plans for a new £25m high school in the city. The 1,350-pupil school would replace the existing Swinton High and Moorside High.
