The business behind West Tower, the tallest building in Liverpool, has been placed in administration. The 40-storey building was completed in 2008 by developer Beetham and stands on Brook Street, overlooking the city's waterfront.

Jon Brown, the agency’s former head of strategy, has been appointed as the firm’s first managing partner. Liverpool's 'Big Society' in tatters
Liverpool was “wholeheartedly” committed to the government’s Big Society vision but was let down by broken promises, according to city council leader Joe Anderson. In a two-page letter to Prime Minister David Cameron, he said the authority had withdrawn its support for the project after being overwhelmed by local spending cuts and Whitehall’s failure to remove “problems and blockages”.

The Wigan-headquartered company, this week the subject of a possible takeover by rival JD Sports Fashion, said it is in danger of running out of cash by the end of March unless it secures additional finance.
