Fisherman’s Friend nets higher sales

Annual sales have remained strong at Fisherman’s Friend, the Lancashire lozenge brand that is now sold in more than 100 countries worldwide. According to the latest accounts for Lofthouse of Fleetwood, the company reported a 1.7 per cent increase in revenue to £34m in the year to 31 December. However, pre-tax profits dipped from £6m to £5.7m. In notes to the accounts, the directors said they were “pleased with the company’s performance”, particularly given the economic uncertainty at the start of the year. The business was founded by pharmacist James Lofthouse who first brewed the menthol and eucalyptus recipe in 1865 to help local fishermen fight chest colds. It is still owned by the Lofthouse family who last year shared a dividend of £3.3m.

Business leaders welcome red tape proposals

Business leaders have given a cautious welcome to the government’s plans to reduce red tape. Business secretary Vince Cable yesterday announced the creation of a ‘star chamber’ to review of all regulation inherited from the last government due to take effect from this month onwards. The proposals also include a ‘one in, one out’ system to ensure the impact of any new laws is balanced by the removal of old ones. Richard Lambert, CBI director-general, welcomed the move, while the Forum of Private Business’s Phil Orford warned that the government must ensure that it does not create more bureaucracy to deal with red tape.
