LinkedIn helps DCS to £1bn

Distribution service DCS Europe, which recently announced it had broken the £1bn sales barrier, has revealed to Insider that £1m of its business was made through social networking site LinkedIn. Denys Shortt, chief executive of the Stratford-upon-Avon-based company, said many Midlands firms “have no idea” how profitable social networking can be for business.

InfoUK goes to market
Market Location, a data provider based in Leamington Spa, has bought Manchester-headquartered InfoUK. The company, which provides consumer and business databases, was bought from its US-based parent company for an undisclosed sum.

Fiveways sold in £27m deal
Entertainment venue provider X-Leisure has sold its Fiveways leisure scheme in Birmingham to the Lewis Trust Group. The London-based group, which owns fashion chain River Island, bought the site for £27m.

Newman to receive £8.5m facelift
A new three-storey building worth £8.5m is to be created at Newman University College, Birmingham. A new entrance site and library will be constructed by the Solihull office of Morgan Sindall.

Fracino brews up property expansion
Fracino, which says it is the only manufacturer of cappuccino and espresso machines in the UK, has expanded by doubling the size of its premises. The Birmingham-based company has also invested £250,000 in new machinery.

A young entrepreneur from South Staffordshire has begun exporting his products to the US after receiving help from UK Trade and Investment. Louis Barnett, who set up his high-quality chocolate company when he was just 12, has signed a deal with a New York-based firm to supply his Chokolit bars.

Time to take a risk, says Coventry business expert
‘Risk averse’ manufacturers in the Midlands are stifling potential growth in exports, according to a Coventry University Business School academic. Professor David Bailey said companies unwilling to take a risk by trading aboard are “stalling economic growth in the region”.
