Plans for Longbridge future submitted
St Modwen and Advantage West Midlands have launched the biggest urban regeneration project in Birmingham with planning applications to redevelop the former MG Rover site. The applications, representing £750m of mixed-use development, including a £82m college, have been submitted to Birmingham and Bromsgrove councils. The 15 year project could create a new town centre, some 10,000 jobs and almost 2,000 homes. Bill Oliver, chief executive of St Modwen, said: "Longbridge is a site with a world-renowned heritage and we have moved this area of the Midlands into a new and incredibly exciting era. The potential Longbridge has to become a thriving economic hub and a sustainable residential community is now apparent. It is more than matched by the vision and confidence St Modwen and Advantage West Midlands have in Longbridge."

All affected passengers have been contacted and offered alternative flights, credit or a refund." Wizz Air will continue flights from Coventry to Katowice in southern Poland. graphic
BCI paints gloomy picture
Birmingham Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCI) has described the Monetary Policy Committee's verdict on the economy as "grim reading". The Bank of England's interest rate setting body voted eight to one in favour of keeping rates at five per cent, with only one calling for a quarter point cut. The MPC also made it clear a cut would be unlikely for "a few months". BCI policy adviser Katie Teasdale said: "The MPC minutes make pretty grim reading. The economy is slowing, house prices are falling and inflation is on the rise." graphic

Crushed Rock turns to Stone
Rock Group, the computer manufacturer and retailer that crashed after alleged theft by a former employee, has been bought by Stone Group. Warwick-based Rock, which went into administration on 8 May, specialised in high-performance laptops aimed at the gaming sector. It collapsed partly as a result of cashflow difficulties caused by "stock misappropriation" by a former employee, which caused suppliers to cut credit. This came as Rock also hit problems getting regular supplies of key components. Administrators from Deloitte, led by Dominic Wong and David Langton, have been working with staff at Rock to conclude an early sale of the business. graphic
