Cable provides hope for AWM
New business secretary Vince Cable has given the strongest hint yet that the “popular” regional development agencies to be retained will include Advantage West Midlands. Yesterday’s policy announcements from the new government included the news that local enterprise partnerships would replace regional development agencies but that they may take the form of existing RDAs where they are popular, confirming the stance David Cameron outlined to Insider before the election. Speaking yesterday at a meeting attended by Insider, Cable said: “There are areas like the North West, Yorkshire and West Midlands, where there are real serious structural problems and there seems to be a broad agreement with local businesses that the RDAs are doing a good job.” However, he added that they would be reformed, with their powers likely to be shifted to a pure economic development focus.

Sports Direct sees Blacks stake diluted
Sports Direct, Britain's biggest sporting goods retailer, has seen its influence over Northampton-based outdoor goods firm Blacks Leisure reduce after it failed to take up its rights to the firm's share offer which raised close to £20m. As a result, Shirebrook-based Sports Direct’s stake in Blacks is down from 27 per cent before the share offer to 14.5 per cent now. At a shareholders' meeting Sports Direct voted against the placing and open offer. However, the resolution was passed after gaining the support of a majority of shareholders. In March, Sports Direct, controlled by Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley, walked away from a possible bid for Blacks, believing key suppliers would not support it if it took control.

Good riddance to HIPs, says Wright Hassall
An industry expert has reacted positively to the news that the newly formed coalition government has suspended the use of Home Information Packs (HIPs) by home sellers with immediate effect. Chris Meredith, head of residential property at Warwickshire law firm Wright Hassall Solicitors, said: “HIPS have done nothing to speed up the process for people selling or purchasing homes. They have added little to the conveyancing process and, I think it would be fair to say, have been a substantial waste of money for a lot of people concerned.” Homes marketed for sale from today will now no longer require one of the packs.
