Businesses ready for deals, says HSBC boss

Businesses in the West Midlands are “sticking their heads above the parapet” and making more growth-enhancing acquisitions. That’s according to Maurice Heath, HSBC’s head of corporate banking in the Midlands, who spoke to Insider. Heath said he expected businesses which exported to high-growth countries such as China and companies in the manufacturing and food and drink sectors to be the success stories of 2011 – but warned that in business “it’s a competition – it’s all about winners and losers”.

Titan division makes £7.4m buy
A subsidiary of Worcestershire-based Titan Europe has acquired the remaining 50 per cent interest in its joint-venture business Titan Jantsa. Titan Italia paid €8.5m (£7.4m) for the business.

Harrison Clark advises £65m deals
Worcester-based Harrison Clark has completed 25 mergers and acquisitions in the last three months. The law firm said the transactions were worth almost £65m.

Enterprise zone proposals revealed
Birmingham city centre could be home to one of the government’s 21 enterprise zones. Proposals have been put forward by the Greater Birmingham and Solihull LEP board, as plans for a zone in the Etruia Valley in Staffordshire were also unveiled.

Hydraulics company expands with warehouse deal
CD Engineering has tripled its workspace. The company, which makes products for mine disposal in Afghanistan and the undersea search for oil, has moved from two locations in Redditch to the town’s North Moons Moat industrial estate.

Retallack returns to Squire Sanders Hammond
The Birmingham office of law firm Squire Sanders Hammonds has appointed James Retallack to its labour and employment team. Retallack joins the firm as partner, having spent 20 years at Edge Ellison in the city.

Rotala ready to roll out new routes
Rotala, the Birmingham-based transport operator, said it is looking to operate new routes and services after posting a sharp jump in revenues this morning. In a trading statement, the AIM-listed company reported a rise in revenues of 10 per cent to the year ending 30 November 2010.
