Plans announced for Derby's biggest office development yet
Plans for a £150m landmark office development able to bring up to 4,000 jobs into Derby city centre have been unveiled. Derbyshire developer Norseman Investments is proposing a 400,000 sq ft office development on three acres opposite the new Westfield shopping centre, between Siddals Road and Copeland Street, following negotiations with site vendor Speeds. The development would be the largest office development in the city. A planning application is expected to be submitted in late September and, if approved, work is planned to start in early summer 2009 and will take two years to complete.

One vision for Nottingham
Nottingham's ruling Labour group is developing plans to bring together local inward investment agencies and regeneration organisations to promote the city as an attractive location to do business. Under deputy leader Graham Chapman, the Greater Nottingham Partnership, Nottingham Development Enterprise, Nottingham Regeneration, Vision Nottingham, Employment and Skills Board and the council's own economic development department would be part of a new organisation possibly called the Nottingham Development Company. Each organisation would continue but under an over-arching body led by a chairman from the private sector and a chief executive. graphic
Major contracts for back-to-work specialist
Derby-based Intraining has won the contract to deliver three new Department for Work and Pensions European Social Fund contracts with a value of more than £13m. The contracts are aimed at helping and preparing disadvantaged people for work. The contracts cover Leicestershire and Northamptonshire, Essex and North East Yorkshire & Humber. graphic
Worthington awaits suitable opportunities
Worthington Group, the company chaired by green industrialist Joe Dwek, has recorded a full-year pre-tax profit of £49,000 an improvement on the £278,000 loss it posted in 2007. Its sole investment at present a 44 per cent stake in Derby-based Trimmings by Design remains profitable. Dwek said: This year has been frustrating as we have not found a viable proposition for the future development of the company, and in the past six months we have been even stricter on our due diligence given the current economic uncertainties. graphic
Start-ups take a dip
The number of companies formed in the East Midlands over the last financial year has falllen 3 per cent to 15,613. The drop from 16,147 was revealed by corporate services firm Jordans as part of research indicating that all but two areas of the UK the north of England and Scotland experienced a decrease compared with the previous 12 months. graphic
Stein wins entrepreneur gong
An East Midlands entrepreneur has scooped a top accolade at the South Region final of Ernst & Youngs Entrepreneur of the Year. Brian Stein of Leicestershire-based Samworth Brothers fought off competition from 52 business men and women to win the business products category at the London Hilton Metropole Hotel. Stein, chief executive of the business that specialises in making and distribution of own-label and other chilled foods, was commended by judges for his determination, values, and entrepreneurial drive. graphic

The joy of Hex
Hex Holdings, the Leicestershire automotive refinish distributor, has acquired the refinish division of Hickley Valtone in a deal funded by The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS). The deal gives Hex two branches in Taunton and Cardiff. The deal was put together by Peter Gray and Ashley Lund from RBS Commercial Banking, together with Alan Urmston from Corporate Risk Solutions; Leigh Risley from Lombard, the asset finance provider; Sharon Foulds, from RBS Invoice Finance; and Steve Ward from RBS Structured Debt Solutions. graphic

FHP gets the Ultimate instruction
FHP has been appointed by Ultimate Estates to market its energy efficient grade A office scheme in Castle Marina in Nottingham, which could house up to 170 employees. Detailed planning consent has been granted for a self-contained three- storey building totalling 15,058 sq ft with parking for 40 cars. Ultimate hopes to achieve a BREEAM very good rating for the scheme, incorporating photovoltaic cells to generate 10 per cent of the building's energy. Completion is expected in summer 2009. graphic
Ministry strikes Peace deal
The former Peace Mills workshops, opposite Nottingham prison, have been sold to the Ministry of Justice. Agents Spencer Birch, acting for the family owners, has agreed terms for the 20,000 sq ft two-storey factory, which was built in the early 1900s. graphic
Hazlewood builds on Derby portfolio
Hazelwood Group, the Derbyshire property developer, has launched two luxury residential developments in Chellaston and Milford. NatWest provided financial support for Horse Chestnut Gardens and Sunny Hill Gardens, with its property finance team in Derby providing support for the land purchases and development costs. graphic
