Retailers ride high in Top 500 rankings
High-street retailers Next and Boots have stormed Midlands Business Insider’s Top 500 table for 2011. The list, which names the top performing companies from across the region by their turnover and profitability, ranks Nottingham-based Boots at number two and Leicester retailer Next at number three. Northampton-based Travis Perkins enters the list at number five.

Access to capital will increase M&As - EY
The number of UK businesses on the acquisition trail is set to increase during the next six months as improving credit conditions make finance easier to access. That's according to Ernst & Young’s 'capital confidence' barometer.

College reveals £24m refurbishment plans
West Nottinghamshire College has unveiled plans for a £24m investment in its campus. Among the developments are the creation of about 43,000 sq ft of additional teaching and learning space, a training hair and beauty salon, health spa and restaurant.

DHL agrees Sherwood Park deal
Logistics company DHL has signed a deal to take a unit in Sherwood Park, Nottingham. DHL will move into the Lakeview development in a deal completed by East Midlands property agent Innes England and NG Nattrass Giles.

East Mids companies named on Sunday Times list
Four East Midlands companies have made it onto the Sunday Times PwC Profit Track 100 list. The list names the UK’s top 100 private companies with the fastest-growing profits over the last three years.

Unemployment figures rise in East Midlands
The region’s unemployment figures are “better than expected”. That’s the view of the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce, despite the fact that unemployment rose in both counties.

Dunelm in Q1 sales boost
Sales at home retailer Dunelm have soared to £139m in the 13 weeks to 3 April. The Syston, Leicestershire-based company said sales had risen almost £12m compared to the same period in 2010. Dunelm also said it planned to open a further ten stores over the next financial year.

Bmibaby halts Manchester and Cardiff flights
Budget airline Bmibaby has confirmed it will axe its services from Manchester and Cardiff airports at the end of the summer. The Castle Donington-based company said it needed to focus on its main markets “in the current economic climate.”
