Derby University woos business with £14m investment
The University of Derby is spending £14m on improving its city campus in Derby over the next two years. About £8m will be spent on a Business and Enterprise Centre at the Jacksons Mill site, Bridge Street, and a further £6m on refurbishing the Britannia Mill site at Mackworth Road. It is anticipated this centre will open in 2010 to offer higher-level workforce skills training and encourage start-up businesses. The news follows details of a separate £13.5m project to improve the three towers at the universitys main Kedleston Road site by 2010.

HW Coates moves north of the border
Leicestershire haulage business HW Coates has moved into Scotland after buying a rival business. The Cosby company has bought McLellan's Transport out of administration, taking its number of distribution sites to 15. It will take control of the failing company's 60,000 sq ft warehouse in Stepps, near Glasgow, and bring another 70 staff on board, taking its workforce to about 300. graphic

Husky embarks on cool deal
Lutterworth refrigeration business Husky Group has secured a £10m-a-year order to supply cash & carry group Metros stores in the UK and Germany. Husky confirmed it was also close to securing a further deal with Metro for the rest of its European operation and Chinese arm, worth more than £10m annually. Metro, which trades in the UK as Makro, will sell refrigeration units to pubs, clubs and shops from 149 stores. graphic
Maple Lake set for growth
Retail software provider Maple Lake is to create up to 15 jobs in Leicestershire. The Canadian-based company employs ten staff at its UK headquarters in Hamilton, Leicester, and is recruiting as the business expands in Europe. Invest Leicestershire and Loughborough University will help the recruitment process by focusing on graduates from the university's Business School. Invest Leicestershire is also in talks with the University of Leicester and De Montfort University over similar agreements to help Maple Lake recruit graduates from computer sciences courses for roles as technical consultants. graphic
Carry on working
Research has indicated that small and medium-sized enterprises in the East Midlands feel abandoned by government and banks. Falling pension and property values leave many owner-managers reliant on their business as a financial cushion, according to a survey by Clifton Asset Management. It says most small business owners in the East Midlands are putting off retirement as a result of the economic downturn. The majority (59 per cent) also don't expect to retire for a decade or more away with 21 per cent not intending to retire at all. graphic

Tenon gets to the Poynt
Accountancy firm Tenon has moved its Nottingham operation to city centre offices, taking on The Poynt in Wollaton Street, part of The Axis building, on a 15-year lease. The space is about 28,000 sq ft and Tenon will be the sole occupant. The firm is relocating from Gregory Boulevard. graphic
BSP raises the bar
Developer BSP Holdings is speculatively building a £2.5m industrial estate in Nottinghams Wilkinson Street area on the site of the former Shipstones Brewery, just off the ring road. BSPs Lewis Industrial Estate in Wilkinson Street will feature six units from 4,000 sq ft to 20,000 sq ft suitable for light engineering, general industrial, storage and distribution. graphic

Tony sets up camp at LPC
LPC Group has appointed Tony Camp to the role of managing director for UK operations. The Leicester company is the UKs largest manufacturer of tissue-based hygiene products and the world's leading supplier of specialist tissue, with an estimated sales turnover of £200m. Camp brings 30 years experience in the UK FMCG grocery market. His primary role will be to oversee the group's continuing expansion, with organic growth and further acquisitions a distinct possibility. graphic
Kaplan cops two more for Keelys
The exodus of corporate lawyers from Derbys Flint Bishop to rival Keelys has continued. Martin Brierley and Julia Brown are set to join David Kaplan in the newly formed Keelys Corporate team when the firms Derby office opens in mid-September. Both Brierley and Brown worked at Flint Bishop with Kaplan before he left earlier in the summer. graphic

Leicestershire car retailer Francis Motor Group has appointed two business-to- business managers to handle corporate customers. Based at Francis Honda in Narborough, Tommy Porter and Paul Atkins will advise owner-managed businesses through to major employers on car fleets. graphic
Cityscape communicates better
Derby Cityscape has appointed Nina Virdi as communications executive. Virdi studied marketing and management at the University of Derby and is returning to the city having handled the marketing for a Leicestershire-based company. graphic
