The spending review has claimed its first victim at Nottingham City Council, with spending on the high-profile MIPIM property show axed. Nottingham City Council leader, councillor Jon Collins, said the council had "regrettably" decided not to provide funding for the event.

UK tops global retail M&A table
The UK had the highest total transaction value worldwide for mergers and acquisitions involving retail businesses in the last 12 months, according to a report by IMAP, the global organisation of M&A advisory firms represented in the UK by Midlands-based Clearwater Corporate Finance. In the year to 30 September, there were 161 deals in the UK worth $3.9bn.

M&S deal helps East Mids industrial take up soar
Take-up of industrial space in the East Midlands increased by 166 per cent in the third quarter of 2010. That’s according to the latest industrial market report by property agent DTZ, which said the region had bucked the UK trend of falling take-up.

Construction jobs at risk by VAT rise - FMB
The Federation of Master Builders has criticised the government's decision to raise VAT in January, claiming it will result in the loss of 7,500 jobs in the construction sector. John Watson, regional director for FMB Midlands, told Insider the government's drive for energy-efficient homes, the Green Deal, could also be threatened by the VAT rise.

Coast to Coast enters administration
Haulage company Coast to Coast UK, which traded as ED Truckin Road Haulage, has gone into administration. The Kettering-based company’s 40 employees have all been made redundant.

Motorola boss joins TTG
The former chairman of communications giant Motorola has joined Derby-based Team Telecom Group (TTG) as non-executive director. Sir David Brown has been recruited to the telecommunications group, which has just celebrated contract wins in Australia, America and the Far East.

Derby law firm Flint Bishop has been shortlisted for the Regional Law Firm of the Year at the British Legal Awards 2010. Flint Bishop is the only firm from the East Midlands to reach the final six at this year’s awards.
