Export drive for baker after bank deal
A Barnsley bakery is selling scones in Australia as part of an export drive following investment into its production capability. The move is supported by a cash injection from Yorkshire Bank.
Scone maker Haywood & Padgett has started the export initiative after stepping up production by investing more than £2m in new technology and buildings.
The plant investment includes a 40-metre long, £600,000 oven which the company said will be able to produce 50,000 scones an hour.
In addition to an increase in production, Haywood & Padgett, which makes one million scones a day, said the move would create jobs.
The company has also started to export to France, Portugal and Spain and plans to expand into the US and Asia.
Founded in 1987 as a one-man business by managing director Wayne Padgett, Haywood & Padgett now delivers daily to the major multiplies including Asda, Morrisons, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Iceland, Aldi and Lidl. The bakery employs 120 staff and has a £13m turnover.
"This business started with Yorkshire Bank backing and now the bank is supporting us as we take the company into a new era," said Padgett.
"The funding is helping us expand our current business and invest in new machinery. This will make us more efficient and double our production capacity so we can create more jobs for the local community."
