Croydon wins top award as Insider toasts property

Bob Croydon, the Welsh representative of the Prince’s Foundation for the Built Environment, was named Property Personality of the Year at Insider's Wales Property Awards last night. The former King Sturge office head was one of nine winners honoured at a lively awards evening hosted by Gyles Brandreth, the broadcaster and former politician. More than 220 developers, builders, agents, advisers and consultants were there to celebrate the achievements of their peers over a challenging 12 months.

Property Personality of the Year

Winner: Bob Croydon, The Prince’s Foundation for the Built Environment

Consultancy Practice of the Year Award

Winner: TC Consult

A relatively young firm, TC has stepped up the pace over the past year, got involved in some major schemes such as Newport’s new university building and taken on staff.

Shortlisted: Arup, DPP

Property Law Firm of the Year

Winner: Geldards

Geldards worked for Admiral on its future office in Cardiff, for Capper on the sale of its South Wales Spar business and for ABP on Swansea Dry Docks. A strong hand to play.

Shortlisted Morgan Cole

Architectural Practice of the Year

Winner: Stride Treglown

Stride Treglown’s projects included the Genealogy Experience and Records Office in Ebbw Vale and Penyrheol School in Swansea. Judges were impressed by the firm’s “mature and refined approach”.

Property Deal of the Year

Winner: Purchase, partial sale and devlopment of former Lysaght Institute by Linc Cymru, represented by DTZ.

This was a complex series of transactions which will help housing association Linc to deliver a £50m housing, retail and commercial redevelopment in Newport.

Shortlisted: Richard Hayward Properties (advised by Savills) purchase of Bowen Industrial Estate, Caerphilly, from HSBC (advised by King Sturge, now called Jones Lang LaSalle); sale of Treforest Industrial Estate by Segro to Hansteen, with Segro represented by King Sturge, now called Jones Lang LaSalle.

Sustainable Development of the Year

Winner: The Works, Ebbw Vale

The team regenerating this former steelworks site impressed judges with low carbon demonstration homes, soil creation on site, a wetland park, an environmental resource centre and commitment to local suppliers.

Regeneration Development of the Year

Winner: Former Rizla factory, Treforest by Richard Hayward and Harold Winton

A classic example of the private sector leading change. The transformation of the cigarette paper factory into TV production facilities, a climbing centre and other units brought jobs and vitality.

Commercial Developer of the Year

Winner: Igloo Regeneration

Igloo’s work on the Porth Teigr development in Cardiff Bay, anchored by the BBC’s studios, is visibly transforming the area. The sale of the site was one of the biggest recent transactions in Wales.

Agency Team of the Year

Winner: DTZ

DTZ worked on over 100 lettings and sales in Wales in the year, including the redevelopment of the Lysaght Institute in Newport and the sale of Havens Head retail park near Milford Haven.
