Rail scheme officials meet to discuss redoubling scheme

Officials behind the Swindon to Kemble line redoubling scheme have met up to discuss the benefits of the scheme.

Representatives from the Department for Transport, Network Rail and First Great Western were among those who provided an update.

The meeting to discuss the £45m project follows backing by the Chancellor in March to give the project the green light. At one stage the scheme was under threat due to a shortage of funds.

Ian Larrard, director of GWE The Initiative in Swindon and Wiltshire, said: "It's important that we continue to work to improve transport in and around Swindon, so when the economy does recover we have in place a long term strategy for transport. The redoubling of the Swindon to Kemble line, along with the electrification of the Great Western Mainline from London to Cardiff, ensures that real change will be seen on the ground."

Once completed, line improvements will aim to allow for additional capacity and faster, more reliable services. It's expected that travel time between London and Cheltenham will be slashed by 20 minutes.
