Tesco set for Middlewich green light
Tesco looks set to get the green light to expand an existing store in Middlewich.
The supermarket giant is bidding to expand its existing 10,000 sq ft store to 35,000 sq ft and build a car park with 317 spaces. Planners at Cheshire East Council have recommended the scheme be approved.
The site covers 6.3 acres and has frontages on to Wheelock Street, Darlington Street and Southway in Middlewich town centre.
Tesco said the development is expected create about 150 jobs, while the existing 80 employees will also be transferred to the new store.
In a report, planning officials said: "The site that is the subject of this application is allocated for retail development in the adopted local plan. Therefore the principle of retail development on the site is acceptable.
"It is considered that the amended plans addressed the previous concerns about the design and landscaping of the site and that the current proposal is for a store and associated development of an improved design."
Planning officials said 70 representations have been received, including 2 petitions in opposition. The petitions contained 30 and 180 signatures respectively.
The plans are set to be discussed at a council planning meeting on 29 February 2012.
