It is tol focus on companies spinning out of the three universities and will invest in other UK spin-outs.

MTI is also the manager of the UMIP Premier Fund, a £32m investment fund in partnership with the University of Manchester.

UMI3 chief executive Clive Rowland said: "This is a very exciting opportunity to develop on a bigger scale the effective model of bringing the capital markets onto the campus which we developed with MTI Partners through the UMIP Premier Fund."

Rowland added that it is a "challenging environment" for investors, given the complexity and early stage risks. But he said the financial rewards for investors can be "very attractive".
