Leaders push Chester Northgate regeneration

Share | |

Cheshire leaders are aiming to reignite the regeneration of Chester with the council taking over the project.

Councillors from Cheshire West and Chester Council voted to terminate its agreement with ING Real Estate Developers.

The partnership with ING was originally struck in 2000 by the former Chester City Council.

Councillor Herbert said the council remains "unequivocally committed" to the scheme and will unveil its own vision of the redevelopment shortly.

Opposition leader councillor Justin Madders said: "This is a momentous but unavoidable decision. The Council has grasped the reins in the best interests of the economic future of Chester, the Borough and the region."

The original Northgate regeneration scheme included a revamp of the market hall and bus station, as well as the building of new retail units and residential properties. It was due to be completed by 2011 but the project stalled in 2008 after being judged unviable during the economic climate.
