Job losses expected at Pilkington Glass
Pilkington Glass' Japanese owner NSG is to close one of its UK lines.
The company said that because of a reduction in demand, the business will be looking to reduce capacity which will lead to it "mothballing of one of the group’s float lines in the UK".
The company has not yet confirmed which UK line will be closed.
The group is to cut 3,500 jobs across the site as a whole. Pilkington employs 3,000 people in the UK and has sites in St Helens and Lathom in Lancashire.
NSG reported a three per cent decrease in revenues in the third quarter of 2011 which it said was because of "deteriorating market conditions".
The company said it had experienced a significant reduction in many of its core markets, especially in Europe. Demand for solar energy glass also "worsened significantly".
Pilkington Glass was bought by NSG in 2006.
