Waitrose openings set to create 105 jobs
Waitrose has confirmed it is to open two new stores in the North West, including its first outlet in Manchester city centre. The retailer, part of the John Lewis Partnership, said the new openings would create 105 jobs across the region.
The company has signed an agreement with developer Allied London to open a new 3,000 sq ft store in Manchester House on Bridge Street. The shop will employ 40 people and provide a “retail anchor” for the area linking Spinningfields with the city centre.
Jon Arnold, head of Waitrose Convenience Stores, said: “The Spinningfields development is an exciting venture and has quickly established itself as a premium destination for financial and professional services. Now it is building a growing reputation for retail, which we believe the quality of the Waitrose offer can help enhance.”
Waitrose has also confirmed it will be opening a new store in Knutsford, Cheshire after agreeing a deal for the Blockbusters and Travelbag retail units in Princess Street. Blockbusters will continue trading until the end of September while Travelbag has already relocated its business.
Work will begin on converting the two units in October into a 6,500 sq ft store which will open by spring 2011. The move will create 65 jobs.
Arnold added: “We have been keen to come to Knutsford for a long time too and the new store offers us another platform to bring our service and produce to a new audience.”
Waitrose currently has one Greater Manchester store in Altrincham and three stores in Cheshire at Cheadle Hulme, Wilmslow and Sandbach.
