No Best Buy for Gateshead
Consumer electronics retailer Best Buy has quashed plans to open a North East branch in 2011, ending talks to open an outlet in Gateshead.
The US company is in the process of expanding into the UK and has confirmed that it will be opening five stores in 2011, bringing its total of UK stores to 11.
It has now ended talks with Team Valley Retail World in Gateshead, which is owned by Land Securities.
A Best Buy spokesperson said that the company’s rollout plans had not changed, adding: “We are in discussions with a number of property owners about securing a variety of potential store locations and markets across the UK. We will provide further updates as and when we can confirm agreed stores.
“Whilst we're not currently looking at a specific property in Gateshead, we wouldn't rule out the city and the North East in future."
Best Buy has confirmed it will open stores in Bristol, Nottingham, Hayes, Rotherham and Enfield this year.
