Demolition work clears path for UCB site

The first phase of the building of University College Birmingham's (UCB) new campus has started with the demolition of derelict buildings.

The work, in Charlotte Street and Holland Street in the city's Jewellery Quarter, is being overseen by contractor Shepherd Construction and is expected to be completed by March.

Professor Ray Linforth, principal of UCB, and Nigel Moss, chairman of the College Corporation, have visited the site this week as Elevate, a demolition contractor from Solihull, carefully dismantled one of the buildings, a disused factory.

The four-acre site is to include teaching and learning facilities including three lecture theatres, a 24-hour study 'hub' and a 200-seater café.

Peter Millett, Shepherd Construction's managing director for its west division, said: "Clearance of the site is progressing at a rate of knots and once this is complete we will be preparing to start work on the groundwork and drainage of the site."
