Work starts at Five Way Morrisons
Construction work has started to develop a 50,870 sq ft Morrisons store at Five Way in Birmingham, creating 300 jobs.
The scheme will also include five additional retail units for let and office accommodation.
Morrisons has commenced the building work following the acquisition of the site from Calthorpe Estates.
The retailer secured planning permission from Birmingham City Council in March 2011.
It will be one of Morrisons' flagship stores, according to David Darbyshire, project manager for the company.
"Five Ways is at the gateway of one of Birmingham city centre's main arterial commuter routes and close to Harborne, Edgbaston and city centre homes and businesses," he said.
"It is an ideal location to position one of our new format stores that will sell a full fresh food and grocery offer."
Birmingham-based architects Davis Weatherill Partnership has been commissioned for the project.
Steve Lewis of appointed contractor ISG said the business will be employ more than 300 construction workers to build the development at various stages.
The store is expected to open before Christmas this year.
